SUPERFAT IS A GOOD THING!
I often get the question, "So what makes handmilled soap better?"
One major benefit is how much more moisturizing handmilled soap is for the skin. Let me explain. Mass produced soap has "fillers" and the industry actually removes the natural glycerin produced from the saponification process.
What is saponification? Well, let me tell you.
When Lye and oils/butters are introduced, the chemical process is called "saponification". This is the chemical reaction of the oils/lye/water coming together and creating soap. This of course is an over simplification of this but it's the basic concept.
So as soapmakers, we have to have a very specific ratio of lye to oils to make sure that one isn't too much or too little in order for the chemical reaction to occur.
Although there is something that can be done to leave some of those oils "left" after the saponification process to offer really deep moisturizing effects. This is called SUPERFATTING the soap.
One can add a little more of certain butters/oils that will not be saponified but instead remain in the bar to offer moisturizing benefits. Note that many oils/butters are too soft or not suitable because they make the bar too soft to use.
Now why am I talking about this? Well our updated Peppermint Soap Bar has Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil Superfatted into our bar. Making it more moisturizing! Then we also added more Peppermint Essential Oil to be a little stronger. A stronger wake up in the shower.
